How should I get started?
Start it today or as soon as you get it from the pharmacy. It’s a good idea to set an alarm on your cell phone to help remember to take the pill at the same time each day. There are two types of pills in the pack:

24 active pills that contain medication. It is very important not to miss any of these pills.

4 placebo pills contain no active medication. You will have your period during the placebo pills. Most people start bleeding on day 1-3 of the placebo pills, but bleeding can start any time when off active pills. Be sure to start a new pack of pills after the last placebo pill, even if you are still on your period.

 
What about side effects?
Most users will have no side effects.

Sometimes there is unexpected or breakthrough bleeding. his usually gets better after using it for several months. Make sure you are taking the pill at the same time every day. Please call our office (720-777-2667) or send a MyChart message if breakthrough bleeding continues.

 
What are the possible cost with drospirenone progestin-only pills?

The drospirenone progestin-only pill is only available as a brand name called Slynd.® Unlike most other pills, there is no generic version.

Your insurance company may not cover this medication or may require that you try other types of hormonal therapy first.

Patient discount programs can help get the cost to $10 per month, or $25 for 3 months. To find discounts, search “Slynd patient discount” on the internet and look for resources at www.slynd.com or www.goodrx.com.

 
How should I request refills?

Contact your pharmacy 2 weeks before you need more medication to request a refill.

What do I need to know when using Drospirenone POP as birth control?
It takes 7 days to be an effective method of birth control. It is important to take the same time each day and not miss any doses. It does not prevent STI’s. Use condoms and get tested at least each year.
